Teaching & the N-word: Questions to Consider
Koritha Mitchell offers a thoughtful reflection on injurious racial terms in the classroom. She doesn’t advocate the cleansing of historical documents or the avoidance of sensitive topics, but discusses the different impact of saying words aloud vs. reading them on the page, and advocates a more considered and intentional approach. She also ponders the performative quality of language and the kind of space the classroom is. Here she presents a Classroom Covenant to guide discussions of problematic terms such as the N-word.
Koritha Mitchell propose une réflexion approfondie sur les termes raciaux insultants en classe. Elle ne prône pas le nettoyage des documents historiques ou l’évitement des sujets sensibles, mais elle aborde la différence d’effet entre dire les mots à haute voix et les lire sur une page, et préconise une approche plus réfléchie et intentionnelle. The Diversity Gap
Representation is about equity, diversity and inclusion, and how these relate to who wields power in institutions like universities. But without empirical data, how can we evaluate representation?
Political scientist and Vice-Provost (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) at the University of Calgary, Professor Malinda S. Smith, leads this project to research the disconnect between what Canada’s university leaders say about race and representation, and what they do about it through antiracist policy (or lack thereof).
